Specific Gravity of Polyethylene Film

The specific gravity of polyethylene film compares the mass of a film sample with the mass of the same volume of water. Since water is close to 1.0 g/cm3 under common laboratory reference conditions, PE film specific gravity is usually close to its density value.

Thickness is usually listed in um, but thickness alone does not show how heavy a roll will be or how much usable area one kilogram can cover. Density converts film thickness into GSM and roll weight.

Basic calculation logic:

GSM = density x thickness

A 30 um film gives higher area yield and lower net roll weight, but it needs enough elongation and tear resistance to reduce removal breakage. A 50 um film gives a balanced reference for handling and coverage. An 80-100 um film gives stronger body and puncture resistance, but it increases roll weight and reduces coverage per kilogram.

Actual gross roll weight should separate net film weight, adhesive coat weight, core weight and packing weight. This prevents a heavy core or packaging difference from being mistaken for a film-density change.

Polyethylene film mechanical properties should be checked as a data group. Tensile strength shows resistance to pulling force. Elongation shows stretch before failure.
